What happened?
On 7 October 2026, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, announced that GPT-6 is coming to everyone. Paying users (Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise) got it first. From 8 October it is rolling out in the regular chat to the free version and the low-cost Go plan. According to the announcement, free users get a lighter version (GPT-6 Luna). Paying subscribers get GPT-6 Sol. According to OpenAI, more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week.
What is “Intelligent UI”? Answers with buttons and charts
The headline feature is called Intelligent UI (UI means the screen layout: what you see and tap). In plain words: ChatGPT now builds its answers from text, visuals and things you can tap or click. Think charts, buttons, small forms and interactive drawings. ChatGPT picks the format that fits your question. If a plain text answer works best, that's what you get.
Examples OpenAI gives:
- a Sunday roast recipe with the cooking timings alongside it;
- the stops of a road trip shown on a map;
- a calculator that shows how your savings could grow;
- a bill splitter for dinner with friends;
- a game you can play right in the conversation.
Faster, too
GPT-6 can start answering while it is still thinking, so you can begin reading before the full answer is ready. When ChatGPT needs to search the web, the quick mode (Instant) starts answering 44% sooner on average, OpenAI says. Note that this compares GPT-6 Instant with GPT-5.6 Instant, so it isn't necessarily about the lighter free version (Luna).
Why it's handy for you
Ask how long to roast a chicken or how to split a bill, and you'll often get a table or mini calculator instead of a wall of text.
How to try it
- Go to chatgpt.com or open the ChatGPT app. No account yet? Follow our ChatGPT sign-up guide.
- Update the app to the latest version. The rollout is gradual, and OpenAI's help page isn't updated everywhere yet. If you don't see GPT-6 in the model menu, it simply hasn't reached your account yet; try again later or use the website. OpenAI says the older ChatGPT desktop apps for Mac and Windows don't support the new features.
- Try one of these: “Make a calculator to split the bill fairly for our dinner for 6.” “Use an interactive drawing to explain how bicycle gears work.”
Tip: find all those buttons and charts a bit busy? In Settings, “Layout and visuals” lets you reduce the new visual elements.
Use it safely
- Check the numbers. A calculator made by AI can contain mistakes. For important money decisions, double-check the result or ask an expert.
- Share no more personal info than needed. You don't need your account number or exact salary to get an example calculation.
- Type the address yourself. Scammers build fake ChatGPT sites. Read our article on fake ChatGPT ads on Google.
